I.              Job Summary

The Quality Engineer is an integral part of the Centro team in performing advanced product quality planning activities as defined by the Centro Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) and in accordance with customer requirements.  The Quality Engineer determines appropriate quality plans for new products and actively provides input into the design of capable processes with a strong focus on mistake proofing.  The Quality Engineer is on the forefront and actively supports Centro engineering and manufacturing in the application of appropriate methodologies to continually improve quality and exceed customer expectations.  Provides strong support in resolution of any specification concerns and overseas customer approval of new projects.  The Quality Engineer also provides strong support to the manufacturing divisions in ensuring successful production of new and current projects.


II.         Relevance and Importance of this Position at Centro, Inc.

The Quality Engineer has great impact on Centro's achievement of our strategic goals and quality objectives.  They have primary responsibility for ensuring that the newly designed, molded part meets or exceeds our customer’s needs and expectations.  They make sure that all of the critical areas of design and performance meet the quality criteria set forth by the customer.  They ensure that all quality design issues regarding new product have been addressed and/or corrected prior to transition into production.  They develop inspection plans and participate in first part approval.   They utilize quality tools and capability studies to ensure the success of this part.  They are responsible for approval and any deviations in new projects.  By ensuring that projects are ready to move to production status and that we are able to satisfy our customer's quality expectations for the future performance of that product, the Quality Engineer plays a critical role in achieving our strategic stretch goals and quality objectives.

III.           Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

1.    Performs all primary and contributory responsibilities as defined in the Centro PPAP or all assigned customer accounts (reference QSP 7100).

2.    Assists in the coordination and execution of any specific customer part approval requirements (including any associated components) for assigned customers.  Is responsible to submit any customer-required paperwork for part approval.

3.    Must be knowledgeable of the status of the projects assigned and perform responsibilities on a timely basis.  Any concerns with meeting responsibilities in a timely manner must be communicated to the Leader.

4      Must be knowledgeable of the design and planned processes to manufacture the part for all projects assigned.  Must actively provide input on any recommended improvements with mistake proofing or any other methodology including SPC that will enable us to meet or exceed customer quality expectations.

5      Creates inspection plans that are meaningful to what is most important on the part and assure conformance.  Conducts MSA as needed to assure an accurate and repeatable measurement process.  Assists with the design of special gauges as needed.  Review and acceptance by the customer should be sought whenever possible.

6.Provides strong support for the Project Engineer in the ISIR Process.   This would include but is not limited to: Assisting with the coordination of the CMM Schedule; Reviewing completed ISIR information and being knowledgeable with areas that are out of tolerance; Assisting where appropriate and beneficial in preparing information for review and providing input into the resolution strategy. 

7.    Assists Project Engineers in: critical characteristic identification, tolerancing, applying appropriate datums, design assessments at prototype and production stages, development of test methods, tools and inspection plans, design of check fixtures and gauges, and project trouble shooting.

8.    Utilizes and facilitates meaningful process FMEA’s and / or any other quality tools that impact quality (i.e. process mapping, root cause analysis, pareto analysis, SPC, etc.) involving all appropriate functions when and where appropriate.

9.    Advises CMM operators regarding inspection scheduling priorities.

10.    Coordinates and is a driver for any needed capability studies.  This includes evaluating what should be studied (in addition to customer requirements), working with the division and Project Engineer on a plan to execute, providing “hands on” support when and where necessary.

11.    Provides strong support and assistance to manufacturing on the successful launch of new projects into production and assists with quality improvements with existing projects when requested and where appropriate.

12.    Tracks all customer approvals and deviations for new projects.  Keeps Sales, Engineering, and Manufacturing informed of the status.  Involves the appropriate Sales Engineer and others as appropriate if issues impact our plans for producing.

13.    Develops positive relationships with external and internal customers.  Is an involved, interested, and valuable team member in ensuring the long-term success of projects in production.  Successful Projects include but are not limited to these actions and outcomes:

a.    Thorough verification and resolution of issues prior to production.  If not resolved, develops a plan for resolution.

b.    Follow through on all resolution issues.

c.    Achievable, robust, and repeatable manufacturing processes defined and implemented.  As much mistake proofing and automation as possible.

d.    A well designed inspection plan.

e.    Working with manufacturing to ensure proper training and the stage is set for successful production.

f.      Providing ongoing quality engineering support to manufacturing for specific projects as requested.  This support may include the application of various statistical and quality tools.

g.    Meets or exceeds customer quality expectations.  Meets or exceeds profit expectations.

14.    Understands and actively reviews Centro’s Quality System and makes recommendations for improvement where necessary.   Actively assists with improvements to Centro’s Quality System as requested.  Assists with the Internal Auditing Process when requested.

15.    Performs other assignments or duties as assigned by his or her Leader. 

IV.           Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

1.   Bachelor’s degree in recognized engineering discipline or equivalent education and experience highly preferred.  ASQ certification as Quality Engineer is encouraged.

2.    Applicable skills in using quality assurance techniques and tools, including statistical process control, statistical analysis, process mapping, root cause analysis, process failure mode effects analysis required.   Is capable of using appropriate measurement and test instruments (i.e. micrometer, caliper, height gauge, CMM).

3.    Knowledge of and experience with Centro’s Quality System & ISO requirements required.  Ability to perform Quality System auditing is highly preferred.

4.    Knowledge of engineering concepts, blue print reading, measurement system analysis (MSA), statistical analysis, design concepts and practices, manufacturing processes, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), materials, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing concepts, and gauge design required.

5.    Excellent organizational, analytical and problem solving skills, an attention to detail and creativity and the ability to complete assigned tasks in a timely and professional manner required.

6.    Excellent communications, interpersonal, meeting management and team building skills required.

7.    Ability to effectively lead and facilitate cross functional teams

8.    Ability to learn and utilize appropriate statistical analysis and SPC software required.  Ability to use Microsoft applications (Outlook, Word, Access, Excel) required.

9.    Must be able to use effectively: personal computer, email, telephone, voicemail, fax, scientific/engineering calculator, standard and drawing copiers, video machine, various hand and power tools, layout instruments and other devices as they are introduced.

10.    Commitment to quality, safety, customer satisfaction, continuous improvement and teamwork required.

Must be able to see, hear, speak, read and write sufficiently for effective interpersonal communications required to accomplish essential job functions.  Must be able to receive, comprehend and apply detailed information, judge depth accurately, distinguish color and variances visually and read measurements.  Must be able to walk, stand for long periods and have hand, arm and body dexterity sufficient to reach, bend, stoop, manipulate, grasp, feel and periodically lift and carry materials up to 50 pounds.

V.            Work Environment and Schedule

Work is performed in both office and manufacturing environments, including dedicated engineering, QA and machine shop work stations with temperatures ranging from 55-100 degrees F.  Normal work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8 AM – 5 PM, with some potential for occasional variances depending on departmental workload.  Periodic travel to all Centro facilities, customers, vendor sites, and conferences including overnight stays, may be required.  Will commit sufficient time to accomplish all job responsibilities in a timely manner. 


A pre-employment physical exam and drug test is required.
